Songas obtains operational excellence certification at its Ubungo Power Plant

Songas Limited, one of Globeleq’s operational companies, has achieved another significant milestone by being the first power plant in Tanzania to be awarded the internationally acclaimed OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 certifications for operations at its Ubungo Power Plant. 

These are only awarded after strict documentation, training procedures and processes are in place and a third party certification body has conducted a rigorous audit to ensure successful assimilation of the organisation’s existing environmental, health & safety processes with the OHSAS and ISO guidelines. 

Chris Ford, Managing Director of Songas, congratulated the Songas team and applauded their commitment to formalize their current high standards already practiced at the Plant.  "It is a very significant milestone and continues to indicate Songas’ desire to grow and develop the power sector in the country by raising the operational bar to international standards.  Demonstrating good management practices is of paramount importance to Songas and this award is an excellent way to show strengths in all areas of operations.”

Ubungo Power Plant’s new system is a combination of OHSAS 18001:2007; the occupational health and safety management system and ISO 14001:2004; the Environmental Management Systems standard.   Both systems are now combined into one integrated management system which help deliver cost and resource savings, and advances the overall effectiveness of the system.  These certifications differentiate a company in a competitive marketplace by clearly demonstrating that it adheres to world-class management standards.

Certified by TUV Nord, a world renowned certification body, Songas has implemented reporting measures and will continue to undertake yearly audits by TUV Nord to maintain its certification.
