Globeleq breaks ground on Peru plant
14 November 2006 (Lima, Peru) - President of Peru Alan Garcia joined Globeleq CEO Torbjorn Caesar at the groundbreaking ceremony for Kallpa, Globeleq’s first complete greenfield project, on Tuesday, November 14. Construction for the first 168 MW phase of the plant has already begun and is scheduled to be completed mid-2007. Planning is already underway for an additional turbine that would double the plant’s generating capacity.
Speaking at the ceremony, Globeleq CEO Torbjorn Caesar emphasized that Kallpa was a good investment for Globeleq and for Peru, and would generate clean, reliable electricity from Peruvian natural gas. President Garcia praised Globeleq efforts, commenting that rising demand in Peru will require 300 MW in new generating capacity each year.
The Kallpa plant is located in Chilca, an industrial and agricultural area 65 kilometers south of Lima, Peru’s capital. There are several other power projects in construction or under development in Chilca, leading President Garcia to declare Chilca the electricity capital of Peru.
