June 23, 2006 - Umeme, the Globeleq subsidary that operates the electric distribution system in Uganda, has contributed over 15 million Ugandan Shillings (approx. $8,100) to the World Food Programme for the global campaign to raise awareness and funds to end child hunger.
The Company’s General Manager, Paul Mare handed over the cheque to the WFP Country Representative, Nicholas Siwingwa on 22nd June at a press conference held at the Company’s Head office in Kampala. The ceremony was attended by WFP top officials from the country office and Umeme’s Chief Customer Services Manager, Sam Zimbe together with the HR Manager, Placid Ssekamate.
The donation was in response to the “Walk the World”, an annual global event which was held on 21st May. Fifty members of Umeme staff led by their General Manager, Paul Mare participated in the Kampala walk event that attracted more than three thousand people.
Mr Mare told the press that part of the funds was contributed by the members of staff to whom he was most grateful. He said the donation, which would feed about 266 needy children for at least one year, was a testimony of the Company’s commitment to assist the needy, particularly children.
Mr Siwingwa commended Umeme for the support, and promised that the donation would reach the intended beneficiaries.
