Menengai is a 35 MW greenfield geothermal project and part of the first phase of the wider Menengai complex, which is the second large-scale geothermal field being developed in Kenya after Olkaria. Globeleq will operate and maintain the power plant once it has reached commercial operations in 2025.
Steam will be supplied to the project by Geothermal Development Company (GDC), a Kenya government-owned company under a 25-year project implementation and steam supply agreement (PISSA). Once operational, electricity will be sold to Kenya Power, the national distribution company, under a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the same timeframe. The project also benefits from a signed and effective Letter of Support issued by the Government of Kenya. The project will deliver clean and cheap baseload power to the national grid and enable GDC to monetise the available steam resources from the Menengai steam field.
Financing agreements were signed on 14th December 2022 with the African Development Bank, the Eastern and Southern African Trade & Development Bank and Finnfund. Globeleq and Toyota Tsusho Corp (TTC), the EPC contractor, signed the EPC and LTSA agreements at a formal signing ceremony in Japan during February 2023.

Menengai est un nouveau projet géothermique de 35 MW et fait partie de la première phase du plus vaste complexe de Menengai, le deuxième champ géothermique à grande échelle développé au Kenya, après Olkaria. Globeleq exploitera et assurera l’entretien de la centrale une fois qu’elle aura atteint ses activités commerciales en 2025.
La vapeur sera fournie au projet par la Geothermal Development Company (GDC), une entreprise publique kényane, ceci dans le cadre d’un accord d’une durée de 25 ans de mise en œuvre du projet et d’approvisionnement en vapeur (PISSA). Une fois opérationnelle, l’électricité sera vendue à Kenya Power, la société nationale de distribution, ceci dans le cadre d’un contrat d’achat d’électricité (PPA) pour la même période. Le projet bénéficie également d’une Lettre de Soutien, signée et effective, émise par le gouvernement du Kénya. Le projet fournira une énergie de base propre et bon marché au réseau national et permettra à GDC de monétiser les ressources de vapeur disponibles du champ de vapeur de Menengai.
Des accords de financement ont été signés le 14 décembre 2022 avec la African Development Bank, la Eastern and Southern African Trade & Development Bank et Finnfund. Globeleq et Toyota Tsusho Corp (TTC), l’entrepreneur EPC, ont signé les accords EPC et LTSA lors d’une cérémonie de signature officielle au Japon en février 2023.
